I finally identified where an AO/IL shadows bug I have is coming from: whenever there's water within the field of view (even if it's occluded), rendering order of some objects changes. I have water displacement off (my problem looks far different than the flickering water displacement causes). I also have multisampling off. You can see pictures of the problem here:
