Post subject:  Re: TES Skyrim

I haven't posted in awhile but I've been hard at work tweaking up a new version of my ENB. I really just want to play the freaking game but something will just always pop up and say 'fix me!', so I immediately alt-tab out to do some tweaking but I think I'm at the finish line. My goal is really to make the best PLAYABLE config. It's not hard to make a pretty screenshot with most ENB setups but try playing an entire day with any config and you will most likely run into an environment that will totally break your immersion by looking all psychedelic or just like a plain hot mess. Because there are quite a lot of configs out there that are totally stunning but inevitably they look wacky in certain situations. I think rad's setup is ridiculously awesome but I just can't play with it. Superb ENB is amazing too but there are qualities of all the great configs that just look so unnatural at times and for me will kill my immersion. ENB has the tendency to make things have this very unnatural inner glow. This happens especially at night with many of the popular configs. Or the color balance isn't always on.

So I'm sure most of you know that when tweaking ENB, you are always making a sacrifice. One change will make situation A look great but situation B will suffer. The Viscous Circle. Anyway, after a weeks long nonstop tweak-a-thon and a few (I'm not actually)sick days, here is my best attempt at making the best PLAYABLE config for ENB... according to my tastes of course :P

Sorry in advance for the massive post ;)

I have just updated to this new version on my nexus page, the link is in my sig. I'd love to hear some feedback from the masters(wink*you know who you are!). If anyone has some spare time, give these setts a whirl and let me know if you run into any environments that get screwy or even any places that you may particularly like too. I tried super hard to maintain a nice balance of contrast and to keep a somewhat muted tone map but Skyrim is harsh mistress and she likes to be very inconsistent at times..

joey4track: I would like to give you enb a run for its money. Perhaps even do some comparison shots to my own enb.. If I can use yours withouth having to restart the game, because of RL or other mods. We'll see :) It does look good on the screenshots.

Two questions. What rain mod are you using? And what creature mod are you using?

I will give your enb a run next time I'm on skyrim.

One more thing. I'm sure you all know FreddieW. He and his team just did a skyrim video :)

@kalicola- Your screens are always astounding and they have been ever since you started posting them but I don't believe I've tried your config. Maybe you haven't released it? Especially the last batch you posted, they do indeed look very balanced. I do have a config for RL but I really like working with vanilla much more for some reason, I feel like I lose something with RL. HOWEVER, the dungeons with RL are sick and a must have for me to play with so I use another mod that just darkens the dungeons etc.. in a similar way as RL does(not the mod that gives certain dungeons night time settings although I do use that one too). You should be able to alt-tab out and compare just fine but I have not tried my config without the dark dungeon mod.

I don't use SSAO for my config though because although it does look really awesome at times, it can stick out like a sore thumb other times and the whole point of my config is to get that overall balance in whatever situation the game may put you in, which unfortunately means making sacrifices. But it runs very smoothly and looks and feels very natural in game and that is the idea. I find screenshots can be very misleading and don't give you an idea of how the settings feel in game. I don't really know how to edit video and my fraps records really dark for some reason or I would try to make a cool video. My config was actually featured in a mod review by SaioTV alongside the awesome Skyrim Monster Mod(which is where I got those creeps from) but it was an old version that is way different than this new version. I kind of think of this config as the 'clean' enb or 'clear' enb. It's not crazy flashy but runs really great in game and gives a nice natural experience. Or maybe these settings are terrible, I dunno beauty is in the eye of the beholder ;)

I'd love to try your config though, PM me and I'll do some beta testing and we can share notes haha

EDIT: and I'm using natural rain or something like that. Whatever comes bundled with RL although I don't use RL.. That storm in Whiterun was awesome, great mod

Ditto. I still sometimes tweak ENB for kicks, but that's about it.

@Unreal Warfare: Cool shot, the bloom reminds me of Dead End Thrill's guy's stuff.

Yea cause he uses CLENB afaik.

Dead End Thrills uses in game graphics only (with a touch of photoshop in some cases to fix oddities) as far as I know. I think he makes a clear note of this on his site somewhere.

I don't use CLENB. I use my own configuration. The only thing that ties it to CLENB is that I use the enbeffect.fx file for the shader options. Other than that the two couldn't be anymore different.

So i wanted to ask why people still cling to the (now buggy) 1.02 ENB, when 1.08 is afaik way more "practical".
Most people have stopped using ENB SSAO in favor of driver level SSAO.

1.08 has all the importand variables still enabled, palette support and the HD6 post-process that most ENB's rely heavily upon are still working.
Its just the [Environment] variables that are missing and i dare say that the general lighting templates can be better controlled with Realistic Lighting because it has a lot more separated swiches.

So it all comes down to Direct and Ambient Lighting swiches, that cant be replaced.

Dont want to piss on anyones leg, im just curious as to why things are like this. I know that you cant get the exact same visuals as 1.02 ( ie Radiks Next Gen config would be impossibru imo) but it really isnt that bad.

PS:
Or maybe it is out of pride that people refuse to use the (not so much) "dumbed down" 1.08 ENB?

PPS:

Nah if you look below the pics it says "customised Cinematic Lighting ENB wrapper"
I mean srsly it shows, that white-hot haze is clearly HD6 bloom (thats all i meant with "CLENB")

I don't use 0.108 because I'm struggling to make mountains look in place with it compared to what I can do with 0.102. The mountains really annoy me to the point where I just switch back to 0.102. I don't know how anyone else gets around this issue but I cannot get my head around it, and to be quite frank just can't be bothered to when I don't need to. 0.102 works fine for me other than the grass post 1.5 patch (which really doesnt bother me that much). I'd honestly rather deal with the grass bug than the cardboard cutout mountains.

TLDR: It just doesn't look how I want it to look.

Also Ambient Occlusion at driver level is only available on Nvidia hardware. There is no Ambient Occlusion on AMD hardware at driver level.

And I still think ENB DoF looks better than Dynavision.

Plus I still have a pre 1.5 exe. :D

Also I don't see how 0.108 is more practical when you have to use another lighting application to alter values. That's not really practical to me. In general 0.102 just offers more control in itself, and works fine for me other than one issue which I have a personal solution for. Until Boris releases a new version of ENB there's just no point giving myself a headache (especially when Guild Wars 2 Beta is open this weekend) in trying to fix something that isn't broken in the ENB version I'm currently using.

Never noticed it. I always thought it was just in game only. I'll check it out.

Joey4track: I tried making one with RL too, I don't know. It didn't feel right to me somehow. I don't wan't my ENB to be very complex. I don't want to copy over too much shit when trying out an ENB.. I have an exterior fog mod, and a eye adaptation fix mod to go along with my enb. But to be honest, those are not really nesseary at all, and I'm sure my enb looks pretty much the same without those. I even consider removing those mods in the final .rar.. Again, my enb is still work in progress, so I don't know what I will end up with in the end..

Anyways. I tried your newest enb. It does look really good, and it runs really fast without that SSAO. I spend some time taking some comparison shots of your enb and my enb. I was just running around randomly taking screens. And below is the result.. Keep in mind that, these are taking with the exterior fog mod, and eye adaptation fix, and a different sun glare. I didn't want to restart the game for every screenshot. But I'm pretty sure those mods won't make a difference at all.. Well, it shouldn't be very noticable at least.

Very interesting to do these comparisons, and I found some stuff I wanted to change in my ENB, when I switched you yours.. Clearly my enb is more colorful than yours. And I find that your clouds at night are very dark, and my mountains is darker than yours and so on. Anyways, these comparison shots DID make me change some stuff in my own ENB, and that is cool :)

Haha, when GW2 is released you will rarely see me here again. I put so much time into the last game (I still log into it now and then now). :)

With 0.102 I can make the mountains look really natural and they never seem to feel out of place. With 0.108 there always seems to be some scenario where they look like they've been cut and paste into the scene. They just don't look right. It's very evident in fog and rain weather types where they are just white among a dark background.

I've played around alot trying to remedy it, using bloom to hide it (by creating a fog), messing around with contrast and saturation correction levels, but it either looks unrealistically too foggy, or just doesn't sit right with the rest of the scene.

It honestly gives me a headache trying to get it right.

I can live with the 5-10FPS loss by using 0.102 and having better control to make it look how I want it to, honestly.
