I think this kind of effect is what they're talking about.
The imagespace parameters in SE for most weathers were all changed to have extra high contrast (about double or even higher). The contrast adjustment probably works the same way as the original, which was pretty bad to begin with, by destroying grey tones. It's not just an armour problem - if you make a character with dark skin, they can go completely black...
