This second part about Win 8 : TRUE :D

Well, about the first part, I had to read it 5 times to understand 20% of it..... :) Anyway, I'll speak only for myself : I understand that everything is a balance between bugs avoiding (wich is pretty hard since you have to deal with the way the game itself works, and all its "strangeness"... :? ), quality and performance.

Well, in my own opinion, the first 2 points matter the most : artefacts avoiding and quality first, then performance. If you come to the point where increasing performance has to sacrifice too much quality of effect or creates artefacts, just stop there.
In the end, sadly, you'll always have to fight against game engine, drivers, and lots of things you can't solve, am I right ?

Re: TES Skyrim 0.120 beta

I guees DX12 is coming for Win9 exclusivly.
See this:
Win2000 - good OS - current and latest Service Pack: 4 - no DX? cant remember
WinXP - good OS - current and latest ServicePack: 3 - DX 8 & 9.
Vista - bad OS - current and latest Service Pack: 2 - DX10 and 10.1
Win7 - good OS - current and latest: Service Pack 1 - DX11
Win8 - bad OS? - current and latest: no planned SP at all, because all bugfixes come as Win9 already - DX11.1
Win9 - good OS again? - current and latest: ServicePacks as DLCs you have to pay for? - DX12

Re: TES Skyrim 0.120 beta

The sad truth is that big money companies are always looking to find new artificial ways to lure people to upgrade. It's pretty much the same thing everywhere, especially so when it comes to consumer electronics - just think about handsets, televisions, set-top boxes and so on. And when it comes to operating systems, a pretty good way to force people to upgrade is to drop support or just leave it out in the first place. Money talks, bullshit walks.

Good luck with the optimization, Boris - just don't lose your sleep over it, there are always better things in life.

Re: TES Skyrim 0.120 beta

No point in upgrading windows for newer directx, where there is only 2 or 3 game that fully uses them.
Win 7 64bit is worth it i guess. But win 8 hell no.

Still none of this matters. Because current game industry is stuck with xbox360 and PS3 commercial lockdown. Until the next generation of these consoles are released games using DX10 or 11 will always be rare. Means no point getting win 8 for next 1 or 2 year.

About next version of TES ENB, you might have to compromise at the face-hair shadow part. Many players use ENB just for nice character pose screenshots and they will be sad with that bug.

Re: TES Skyrim 0.120 beta

If you mean "stereoscopic 3D" in Directx 11.1, that's for video, not audio. All Directx 11.1 adds is support for the Windows 8 user interface and XNA libraries (so they can easily port XBLA games to the Windows store).

Re: TES Skyrim 0.120 beta

stereoscopic 3D in audio doesn't make sense.
Boreis meant video I think, as he surely knows, what it means.
He spoke of hardware accerlated sound, something completly different.

It seems, Win7 gets some kind of DX11.05:
ID3D11Device1, ID2D1Factory1, IDWriteFactory1, IDXGIFactory2, IWICImagingFactory2, ID3DUserDefinedAnnotation and related APIs are available. Methods that depend on WDDM 1.2 drivers or new Windows Store app APIs are not supported.
Improved Direct3D 11 device interoperability via ID3DDeviceContextState, including the improved interop with Direct2D/DirectWrite
D3D11_FEATURE_DATA_D3D9_OPTIONS feature detection
In addition to the new Windows 8 WIC features, this update also fixes decoding of 96bpp floating-point TIFF images

Best of it: it's available already: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2670838/en-us

Re: TES Skyrim 0.120 beta

Stereo i mean 3d vision and hardware sound mean acceleration of 3d sounds via sound card, quality and performance accordinly many times better.

Damn noise patterns killing me. Today i stopped to research valid noise functions and tried to paint jitter texture. Okay, it's very nice looking as tiled regular noise per pixel on screen and after blurring, but sky lighting effect looks not any better than using functions and far more noisy than old 0.120 version of effect at quality 1 (but it's twice slower!). I'm really out of ideas what to do with this effect, make old version or continue experimenting with multiple noise types? 4*4 jitter texture and 4 samples are totally 64 gradients, should be very nice, but in fact it's not. Attached image of blurred and non blurred noise.

I can't help myself, but right side looks more the way I want to look this game.
Sure, this wont help you. It's just my personal taste.

Well, since I think quality is more important than performance (every day more and more people will be able to afford more powerful hardware), I don't think there's anything wrong in going forward with the old version. Also, you can always get back to it later if you feel like it or get new ideas.

CosmicBlue
One side is filtered, another is not

mindflux
Old skylighting at quality 1 (as quality 2 too much noisy) cost 5 ms on my gf9600gt at 1152*864 resolution, so 1080p will be 10 milliseconds. One pass only new is 2-2.5 ms (filtering is separately, but also must be added, 1.2-2 ms). If to convert ms to fps and game running at 50 fps by default, then result 1080p will be about 33 fps. I did many performance changes already, but all of them from 5-9 ms optimized to 2-4 ms, but sky lighting (don't like this name, but simpler to separate from ssao for users) is the biggest performance killer now, ssao+ssil are just 1.5-2.5 ms (not decided yet which version to use). Detailed shadows did adaptive to distance, so 2 meters near some surface it will be much more detailed and performance will be same slower as everywhere in 0.120 detailed shadows (but quality better). For the future presets guess better to decrease all quality parameters by one to get same visual result and twice faster speed. Each quality step is about 1.5 times slower then previous, at least trying to do such. Exception is extreme quality mode -1, for detailed shadows it's values too high.
