I get black shadow around my character and other living things in interiors with AO enabled. It get's stronger if I turn up the range setting, but at the minimal of .10 I still get a shadowy outline.

You should tweak ssao/ssil setting yourself. At this moment to avoid existing artifact, set ao mixing mode = 2.

I've tried all different settings and it still does it. It's not so bad in far harbor so far.

Oh c'mon, you haven't tried all setting if it looks like that. Set ao mixing mode =2, decrease amount of ao, press button "save changes" and then "apply changes".
