First post here. Hope I do this right!

I've been having this issue for a week now, and despite some kind and generous help with narrowing the issue down over at /r/skyrimmods, I haven't been able to solve it. I did a preliminary search here and see any number of posts about flickering shadows, but none that seem to fit what I'm experiencing. If I've missed a relevant post, I'm happy to be pointed in the right direction.

As I pan the camera in first or third person, the shadows darken or lighten and slide away from me. Placing the camera toward a light source such as the sun results in a drastic and immediate shadow (such as over my character), which then completely disappears when panning away. At times, shadows follow me as I pan, and sometimes these shadows have a defined edge to them when the shadow ends and light begins. You can see the effect in these two YouTube videos I've taken (excuse the quality): https://youtu.be/kTlLqJeNuig and https://youtu.be/h9A0_RtkP7s.

  1. This happens dramatically with the .305 binary, more subtly with the .292 binary, and almost or not at all with the .279 binary. The game is only really bearable with the .279.
  2. I originally had the issue with NLVA, built over the Vivid Weathers preset with .305. But I've found that the same effect happens with other ENBs, such as NLA, on the .305 as well.
  3. The effect doesn't happen indoors, as best I can tell.
  4. It happens with or without four of the five .fx files (CTD without enbeffect.fx).
  5. I've tried other users' skyrim.ini and skyrimprefs.ini files, with the same result.
  6. I've wiped and reinstalled Skyrim three times, and it still happens even on a clean install with only Alternate Start, the NLVA/Vivid files, and ENB running.
  7. For the heck of it, I tried toggling everything that can be toggled in the ENB overlay. Still happens.

So I'm at a loss for what to do. The game isn't playable when the whole world is shifting, so I'm hoping the issue is my general stupidity and it's something really obvious. But I can't see it, so I'm appealing for help or advice. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

May be it's skylighting enabled in enbseries.ini? Usually it have such bugs when some geometry is not drawed by the game. If so, can be improved by tweaking skyrimprefs.ini to enable shadows for some types of objects.

Hey, thanks for your reply! I tried a few things based on your comments. Seems like it's still a puzzle. Here's what I found--

Disabling skylighting doesn't seem to affect the issue.
Replacing my skyrimpref.ini settings with those of someone who has it working with the .305 binary doesn't seem to affect the issue either. Were there particular shadow settings that you were thinking of that I should check?

It seems weird to me that the .279 binary works OK, but the .305 doesn't...so strange.

EDIT: I deleted and/or replaced all of the weather .inis and .fx files, and the only thing that seems to make a difference is replacing the .305 d3d9.dll with .279. Every other file can remain the same as long as I switch that one. Which probably doesn't tell me anything, but it continues to be puzzling.

If you disable skylighting and restart the game after that with no result, it's unknown bug, of course not produced by the mod, but just another one reported last days. What kind of crap causing so many reports, i have no idea.

Hm, all right. Thanks for your response. It's unfortunate that this issue is happening--it's now starting to happen on .279 as well. Maybe I'll have to put Skyrim aside for a while and hope something emerges that helps. Thanks for your feedback! :)

Yeah, what's with all these issues suddenly?

What are your system specs?

Just because I'm a total n00b on this forum--has this sort of thing been happening a lot lately? I'm curious.

My machine is mid-range. I typically run at around 40-55 FPS comfortably. The frustrating thing is that I'm not new at this--I've been playing TES games for a long time, and I've never had this amount of difficulty getting a game set up. It's been about a month of troubleshooting.

Specs:
Processor: Intel Core i7
RAM: 16 GB
System: Win 8.1, x64
GPU: GeForce 670
Samsung SSD 830, 120 GB

The .279 binary plays much better in terms of lighting, but I'm still getting what I can only describe as a 'shiver' in the world lighting as I turn--a brief darkening of vision. Happens in all weather and makes exploration painful if you ever need to look at the ground.

I've used ENBs as long as we've had them and never had a single issue. Even reliable ENBs I've used in the past don't work, and I've reinstalled multiple times.

Here's my load order and .ini files, if relevant: http://www.modwat.ch/u/driftlake

Sorry if this message seems frustrated. I like to think I can figure my own problems out but this seems to be beyond me.

EDIT--oh, and if it's relevant, in all of this testing, I consistently have what I can only describe as a second, faint sun opposite the actual sun in the sky...see here (almost directly in the center): http://i.imgur.com/t6uCyLa.png

I think the problem is in gf10x0 drivers, it's always pain in the butt when new videocards are released. There is no other explanation (except some crapware autoupdated).

I started to suspect that too, hence asking about the specs... It would be interesting to know whether it's just the Nvidia users being plagued by these recent issues.

I guess the OP could try some of the older drivers to see if it makes any difference.

I went ahead and rolled back my drivers and purged Nvidia settings. Tried drivers back to 344.75 (2014), but got the same results. I know this one worked at one time, so maybe there's some kind of complex interaction happening that is going to be pretty hard to pinpoint?
