ssao not active

When I tick on ssao, there's no change in the display. I kick all the settings to extremes and there's no change. I recently upgraded from 201 to 217. I've used it in many previous versions with no problem, but it didn't work from the beginning with 217. I upgraded my video drivers and am running 326.80 beta after working my way up from the most recent "stable" because it didn't work there either.

I've made sure that vanilla skyrim settings are the way that enb likes. I've also looked at the nvidia control panel... does enb want the nvidia controls set to "off" or "use application"?

Any ideas what I should check or change?
