Don't spend too much effort on something that people won't even notice, mate. On Skyrim, it's useful to have Skylighting but it's not "that" visible anyway if you see what I mean. You know as much as me that most of the users will probably disable it because they can't set it or anything.
I feel bad to see you spending your time on filtering the AO to keep performance for the users for a feature.
Maybe you should move on, on another effect or something? You had plenty of ideas last time... ^^
P.S : Everyone, give Boris a hug, he needs some! <3!

Re: TES Skyrim 0.120 beta
Yeah, I love the effect, but I've noticed that most configs are too dark and have this effect disabled because it makes shadows pitch black for them, or set very high AmbientMinLevel which is pointless.

Re: TES Skyrim 0.120 beta
Okay, I guess, I like it filtered then
Honestly, I have no problem running Skyrim with...hm, lets say at least 15fps. I got these anyway every time a start a new game.
It's no competition against other humans like Unreal Tournament or Quake Arena or Counterstrike or something like that - in those games I would set graphic quality to minimum to achive maximum fps. And for sure, then I would not use ENB with them, as it is senseless then.
But in Skyrim...it lives with its graphical immersion, it becomes more credible and realistic with better graphics. And sometimes, improved meshes or high detailed textures are not enough. On the other hand, if it starts stuttering because of to much load for graphic card or cpu (in my opinion in most cases a result of HD and full vram) and I got killed because of this...well, thank god its a everywhere savable singleplayer game - I reload and try again, sneaking instead of rushing forward, so the system got the time needed to load new textures.
Maybe I am alone with this opinion and of curse too few fps can cause headache, but I really don't need 50+fps in every game. Strategic games like Command & Conquer the same as for Skyrim.
I think it really depends of gameplay type (as i wrote competitive games only need high fps for me) and personal eye velocity, some see 18pfs as being smooth, some 24 or 25, some 33. I guess, my eyes so old already, that it can't recognize more than 18fps anymore
So if you ask me, give us as many quality settings as possible, that can be disabled.
SkyLigthing is a - or better: the number one performance killer in coming release? That's okay, as long as it can be disabled and sure most will, as they don't recognize that effect.
I clearly want it and you can leave it as it is, if you think, you can't opimize it any more or doing so gives you too much headache.
Anyway, as ice suggested:
Hug you, Boris. Lean back, take a deep breath, catch some food, take a nap or some hours of sleep, go out, meet some friends, relax, take your time. What you have done so far wont run away.
And we sure can wait.

Re: TES Skyrim 0.120 beta
I agree with pretty much all of the above. I don't care about framerate that much either just as long as it's consistent.
If it's possible, of course the best solution is to give a wide variety performance vs. quality options like you suggested. That way the people who don't care for or don't know how to use Sky Lighting can disable it or use one of the lower quality settings. That said, I think that after SSAO and SSIL, Sky Lighting has become one of the most important features of ENB, a real breakthrough effect if there ever was one. When properly configured it looks superb and it's a must in achieving a believable lighting. And anyway, judging by the numbers alone it sounds like you've already gone out of your way to optimize the performance, and in my opinion it was already pretty good considering all the goodies. As always, impressive work.

Re: TES Skyrim 0.120 beta
Skylighting is not much effective if weather parameter is not set properly for it. There is a mod in Nexus ENB Weather Extended. Use that with skylighting on to see some visible change. A good ambientminlevel is 0.35 for almost any ENB setting.

Re: TES Skyrim 0.120 beta
I want to make different skylighting code, that's why require more performance from it. At this moment it's black-white like ambient occlusion, but wish to move to it's computations ssao code (but keep ssil as post process), this gives much better result. Also capture sky hemisphere and trace rays to it's texture, then add this lighting to existing ambient and decrease existing same ways as it's now with skylight enabled (did such thing in commercial project, looks great, especially when sun is at horizon).

Damn that sounds good, I can only imagine the new possibilities that would open up as far as realistic light behaviour is considered.
By the way, did you figure out a workaround for the the issue with SSAO and missing normal maps?

Re: TES Skyrim 0.120 beta
@Boris :
Just take some rest now ! We can wait. Just release this beta as it is and take a break off Skyrim !
BTW, a totally silly question : would there be a way to use different palettes : for example one for exteriors and another one for interiors at the same time ?
If possible, can it be set with a simple Interior / Exterior code addition in the effect.fx or does it require something from the binary itself ?

Re: TES Skyrim 0.120 beta
There are several textures in the game that are extremely bright for me and I cannot figure out how to fix it. It seems that anything that has and fxeffect file is affected.
Like waterfalls, smoke, spiderwebs, candle light, fog.
