Re: TES Skyrim

Gorgeous screens, everyone. Pondcypress in particular, really cool moody contrast.

I was taken down by a flu yet again so it's been kind of slow, but I did try my hand at making a new green grass based on stock by Elinen. I don't know, it looks a bit like something from the garden, and since I haven't replaced the other green grass types, especially the one with flowers, yet, it does stick out somewhat. It is of very high resolution, though. Feel free to give it a spin, any feedback is appreciated. Simply copy the .dds file to textures/landscape/grass, use any suitable mesh you'd like to (vanilla is of course fine too).

Cool, looking forward to trying it out. Thanks mindflux

Looking good, but you're right that it looks "from the garden". It's clearly sampled from improved grassland (chemicals used to keep fields and gardens growing with nothing but one desirable species of grass). Real wild grasses are mixed with a lot more grass varieties and wildflowers. Certainly adding flowers will help too (like Vurt did with his overhaul), but I think the best method would be to create a grass texture that mixes multiple grass species together - so you'll have that illusion of variety even if you only have one texture visible:

Thanks, that's pretty much what I thought too. I've seen some types of grasses in the woodlands, but nothing like that. I did grow up in the countryside, after all... I was actually thinking yesterday whether it would be possible to come up with more realistic grass textures, and something like in your screenshot (great stuff, I saved it for future use) would be perfect especially when mixed with even more variation (new textures, not added to that one) to add more spice and prevent 'tiling' effect. One problem is finding textures as it's winter here, but even if it wasn't, I don't really have the necessary equipment to produce high quality textures. Will explore my possibilities...

Re: TES Skyrim

@Mid - Thank you! I do plan on releasing it soon.

Here is a pic from a very old enb preset. No SSAO present here either.

I always wonder if it's possible too - I work as an Ecologist, so during the summer I'm always out and about in the countryside studying plants and protected species :D

I think even if most people wouldn't recognize why a grass texture that is more diverse looks better than a grass texture that is just one basic species, they would probably think subconsciously that the more diverse texture does look better and more realistic. I think that's why Vurt's overhaul is so popular. He has found a way to add a lot of variety to grasses by having multiple textures show up alongside each other, giving a more realistic look to ground flora. There's certainly room for improvement though (especially where pure grasses are concerned, and not just flowers) if you wanted to create a great alternative ;)

Also, I recently discovered this excellent grass overhaul for Oblivion which might provide some more inspiration as to how to integrate new grass textures: http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/42400

Darkstone: Been a while since I tried Vurt's, after seeing that shot had to redownload it myself. Now I need to find compatible mods again for it though as I know some mod I was using had a vurt's compatibility option... just have to figure out which one.

Edit: Added a couple more after game crashed :( Using .223
