Re: AO + IL and skin
Actually, AO looks really bad on skin when you have armor on. The AO radius is so large and the algo so approximate that it causes my player to have black arms but a white face. Well, as white as they get in interiors, since all the skin is so dark now, like Krista posted much earlier.
This is at least with AOMixingTypeInterior 2, which is what looks good in Interiors for me. MT0 has zero effect on what I consider "AO", and only contributes IL.
AO certainly does not improve skin, and IL even with super-high values does not contribute much to improve skin. Here is proof:
MT2 OFF
MT2 ON ** Notice the black arms issue **
MT2 ON - High IL ** No real contribution to skin **
With IL off in MixingType 0, you can see there is zero AO contribution (notice maximum AO values):
MT0 OFF
MT0 ON
MT0 - High IL ** Again, no real contribution to skin **
You can view the full resolution by using the menu in the top corner of each image.
Also, in that gallery, the first 3 images show when crouching that the black arms are not an issue with SSAO ON/OFF. This tells me the AO algorithm is too approximate. Of course changing the range to higher values will remove the black arms, but then far details don't look quite right. At least with MT2, there is some AO contribution. I would switch to MT0 if there were any AO contribution in interiors. I think without AO, there is no need to add only IL, which is all MT0 does in interiors.
