Agreed about the performance hit. But this is when keeping same scales.
Boris just changed the code and he warned us about it was needed to change scales.
So I guess it's a first try on his side.
I think he's trying several directions for now, in order to settle the best steps for further development.
Actually, I did notice an improvement in SSAO's sharpness and precision. Range seems to behave differently. I noticed it was less needed to decrease range in order to keep precision, and that AO was better interacting with Skylighting in exteriors.
They do seem to complement better to my eyes.
Guess it's related to each's own preset also, depending on our settings.
I decided to have several hours testing with each evolution, since it needs our poor brains to adapt.
