Well, since the 380 is a 285 rebrand, I assumed it would have xp drivers. Afaik with a 32 bit operating system 4gb ram isn't all too helpful, so the r9 285 should do just fine. GCN 1.2 has some nice, if minor additions over 1.1.

Well, efficiency depends on what you do. Furmark shows the real efficiency, the other stuff is just rasterizing (which is actually a only a small part of what you can do with a GPU).

With Maxwell NVidia only just caught up with AMD for important shader architecture features but is still slower if you really use the hardware. GCN really is a great architecture for (compute-) shader performance. It is a little harder to optimize for though and it ofc depends on what you want to do with your GPU.

Re: TES Skyrim 0.279

Spock
AMD does their drivers by HD 7XXX series, R9 2XX series, R9 3XX series, etc. So the 285 it seems as XP drivers but the 380 doesn't. It's a bit odd way of doing it, but fairly user friendly I suppose.

As a note about efficiency, I just read a full review of the Fury X last night and, apparently, it's more energy efficient under normal use scenarios than the Titan X and 980ti and basically matches the performance. Anyways, I'd love to keep talking about this but, unless Boris needs more suggestions, we should probably take it to another thread, maybe in the AMD board or General board?

Re: TES Skyrim 0.279

I wonder if any one can explain why, when I remove a mod and load up the game it will say at the beginning files missing etc, do you want to continue to load.. YES or NO

Now if I quickly click the YES within say 2 seconds the game will load my save and all is well. But if I leave it longer and then casually click the YES the game will pause and crash to desktop. Its like I have a window of about 2 seconds to click YES before the game will CTD.

Its been a long time this been going on for me (wrapper 190 on wards) and putting it out there to see if its just me.

Source please. I've been hearing this mistaken assumption in some places.

As for getting a new AMD GPU, given that the makers rolled out their take on the Fiji chip, I'd say it would be safe to wait for at least a few months to let them iron out those kinks after the first wave of releases.

Okay... going back topic, I've been using 0.279 with my customized True Vision preset. So far, no stability problems of sorts, as I'm running the game with 15.7 Cat (this version now has some control over framerates) Win7/64 drivers for the HD7750.

Re: TES Skyrim 0.279

A 380 isn't a 285 rebrand. The 380 uses a slightly revised version of the Tonga GPU which appeared first in the 285. The 390 and 390X are extremely overclocked rebrands of the 290 and 290X... With twice the VRAM.

Re: TES Skyrim 0.279

anyone else experiencing heavy framerate issues with skyrim in Windows 10? (nvidia 970 gtx here, latest win10 drivers). framedrops of 3 times lower in certain situations and view directions, exterior only i guess.
ENB off (shift+f12) same thing. have yet to figure out what is the cause exactly.
just wanted to give a heads up (in case you plan to upgrade... ) or maybe someone wants to discuss.

Re: TES Skyrim 0.279

I haven't spent much time in skyrim lately, but it was the first thing I tested after I upgraded yesterday. My frame rates actually seemed slightly higher than before (5 or so) but that may have something to do with 0.279... Apparently I hadn't downloaded it yet... The increase was pretty consistent so I know it's not just some sort of placebo effect. So either no change or a frame rate increase for me... But my GPU is very different from yours (R9 290, Catalyst 15.7.1)

Re: TES Skyrim 0.279

hi jafin
yes 0.279 really boosts framerates for a lot of people by 5 fps.
but... ok i am stupid. i forgot about the memory management. used the VRamSizeTest Tool. Win10 dx9 has only 4064 MB (instead of windows 7 having 11000 for me, that was also set in enblocal). so i set autodetect memory size in enblocal (also giving 4064). also disabled unsafememoryhacks. seems to be very smooth again.

Re: TES Skyrim 0.279

I was having some issues (map view flicker) until Steam layer downloaded and installed some files. FF13 kept CTD when I played Steam offline, but all Dx9 games worked fine after I went Steam online and downloaded. Skyrim on Win10 seem much fps consistent and much smoother. I didn't see rise in fps, but Dx9 games seem to have the stable high fps.

Tomb Raider (Dx11) got nice fps boost. Mininum 58fps and Avg 60fps 1080p. My Realtek DTS Connect 5.1 (real time PCM to DTS) is not working in Win10, and M$ has a patch ready but don't know when it would be available.

EDIT: Here's the link that shows M$ admitting a bug in Win10. The analog 5.1 plugs works but not optical or hdmi digital outputs.
No fault in Realtek driver but M$ bug

I have some issues with my onboard Realtek audio. I even downloaded the latest Win 10 drivers for the audio from Gigabyte (mobo manufacturer) and my back panel audio doesn't seem to work. Fortunately i either use a headset (and thus can use front panel) or I use speakers on my monitor (LCD TV actually) via HDMI so it's not a huge problem for me. It's the only real issue I've had but since I worked around it in 5 minutes it hasn't really bothered me.

I had to reinstall steam for it to go online, which was weird, but again, it was fixed in minutes. These are more or less normal things when doing a major OS upgrade so I haven't sweat it.
